Marine scientists in Canada and abroad are puzzled by bizarre photographs that appear to show the skeleton of a large mammal jutting out of an iceberg that recently drifted past Newfoundland's east coast.

The six pictures show what looks like a brown rib cage and spinal column, slightly bent, sticking out of a crust of ice.

Contrary to widespread critical and mass opinion accumulated over fifty years, author Ray Bradbury insists that his classic novel Fahrenheit 451, originally published in 1953 during the McCarthy era, isn't really about government censorship.

China and USA in New Cold War over Africa’s Oil Riches

Darfur Refugee CampDarfur Refugee CampDarfur? It’s the Oil, Stupid...

by F. William Engdahl

Global Research, May 20, 2007

To paraphrase the famous quip during the 1992 US Presidential debates, when an unknown William Jefferson Clinton told then-President George Herbert Walker Bush, “It’s the economy, stupid,” the present concern of the current Washington Administration over Darfur in southern Sudan is not, if we were to look closely, genuine concern over genocide against the peoples in that poorest of poor part of a forsaken section of Africa.

No. “It’s the oil, stupid.”

Ending the marijuana monopoly

Medicinal MarijuanaMedicinal MarijuanaFederal officials should allow competition in growing the drug for needed studies on its medical use.
May 31, 2007

Discussion OF medical marijuana has always been heavy on rhetoric, elisions and grandiose claims. What it has lacked is reliable research that might bring some of the discussion into line with reality. This is because access to the government's monopoly supply of research-grade marijuana is so restricted that the necessary research is effectively impossible.

Citing the need to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is calling on congressional leaders to give vegetarians a tax break.

In a letter sent Wednesday to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), PETA President Ingrid Newkirk stated, “[V]egetarians are responsible for far fewer greenhouse-gas emissions and other kinds of environmental degradation than meat-eaters.”

The letter added that vegetarians should receive a tax break “just as people who purchase a hybrid vehicle enjoy a tax break.”

Democrats and Republicans: Foreign Policy Rhetoric

Democrats vs. RepublicansDemocrats vs. Republicansby Jerry Mayer of Democracy Arsenal

So there's still time (about 12 days!) to enter the contest for coining a slogan to describe the Democratic foreign policy for '08. To spur you to greater heights of deft wordsmithing, here is what I found as the current slogans for the Democrats running for president:

Obama
Strengthening America Overseas
Or, possibly--
Strengthening American Security in the 21st Century

Biden --he didn’t seem to have a position paper on general foreign policy, but he did have a slogan for his Iraq policy of dividing the country into three regions:
Iraq: A Way Forward

By ROBERT Y. PELTON - Iraq Slogger - 6/2/07

Steve Faineru continues his energetic coverage of security contractors with yet another scoop. It appears the awarding of the largest single security contract in Iraq to a controversial former mercenary has been derailed, not by Congress, not by media controversy, but by the efforts of a single citizen.
