"It is often remarked in the First World that, from the president on down, Americans are the most ignorant -- in the literal sense of not knowing what they ought to know -- of any people with First World advantages."

"Democracy has failed because so many people fear it. They believe that wealth and happiness are so limited that a world full of intelligent, healthy and free people is impossible."

"Social action must be animated by a vision of a future society."
--Professor Noam Chomsky

... and as visions of the future go, it doesn't get any better than Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek. Unfortunately, given the extent to which laissez-faire capitalism (otherwise known as Reaganomics) is CURRENTLY dominant in America, Roddenberry's vision is under attack because it depicts the Human race as having abolished poverty, and obviously, a libertarian has less than zero interest in THAT.

What's worse, it's also assailed from within since Roberto Orci -- one of the screenwriters behind the 2009 Star Trek remake -- said during a Q&A with fans that, "there's money, or some kind of credit system in this [version]."

"The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting."

"Do you want to know what power is? Real power? It's not ending a life; it's saving it. It's looking in someone's eyes and seeing that they realize something they'll never forget: They owe you."
--Batman: Black and White, Volume Two

"Money is a terrible thing. Why do people work at jobs in Star Trek? Why does someone become a baker? Because the family is going to starve to death? No. People become bakers because certain people love the smell of things baking."
--Gene Roddenberry, from Yvonne Fern's book, The Last Conversation

Dream Jobs or Death
by Saab Lofton

According to an episode of Star Trek: Voyager, "Money went the way of the dinosaur," by the dawn of the 22nd century, thanks to something called the "New World Economy." Or as the show's creator, Gene Roddenberry, said right before his death in 1991.
